inotify (inode 알림)은 파일 시스템의 이벤트를 모니터링하고 해당 이벤트를 API를 통해 실시간으로 어플리케이션에 보고하는 리눅스 커널 서브시스템입니다.

inotify는 개별 파일이나 디렉토리를 모니터링하는 데 사용할 수 있습니다. 디렉토를 모니터링하면, inotify는 디렉토리 자체와 디렉토리 내부의 파일에 대한 이벤트를 반환합니다.

inotify-tools는 inotify에 대한 간단한 인테페이스를 제공하는 리눅스용 명령행 프로그램 세트입니다. 이 프로그램들은 파일 시스템 이벤트를 모니터링하고 그에 따라 조치를 취하는 데 사용할 수 있습니다. inotify-tools는 4개의 유틸리티로 구성됩니다: inotifywait, inotifywatch, fsnotifywait, fsnotifywatch.

inotifywait는 파일 변경에 대한 효율적 대기를 제공하므로, 쉘 스크립트에서 사용하기에 적합합니다.

inotifywatch는 파일 시스템 사용 통계를 수집하고 각 inotify 이벤트의 수를 출력합니다.

fsnotifywait와 fsnotifywatch는 inotifywait 및 inotifywatch와 유사하지만, 기본적으로 리눅스의 fanotify(7) 인터페이스를 사용합니다. fanotify API는 파일 시스템 이벤트에 대한 알림 및 차단 기능도 제공합니다. inotify(7) API와 비교해서 추가 기능으로, 마운트된 파일 시스템에서 모든 오브젝트를 모니터링하는 기능, 액세스 권한 결정 기능, 다른 어플리케이션이 액세스하기 전에 파일을 읽고 수정하는 기능을 포함합니다.

inotify-tools는 방화벽 시스템의 보안 활동이나 침입자에 의햔 웹서버의 새 파일 변경 및 추가를 감지하는 데에도 유용합니다.
