Buffer implementa un doppio buffering e può essere usato per mantenere il flusso dati verso dispositivi di backup a nastro o verso la stampante. Può anche essere usato per convertire un flusso dati in output a blocchi.
Buffer usa la memoria condivisa per convertire un input con velocità variabile in un output con velocità costante. Tipicamente è usato con una pipe fra il programma di backup e il dispositivo a nastro, ma ha anche altre applicazioni come il buffering dei dati da stampare nel filtro di ingresso di lpd.
