PackageKit permette di svolgere semplici attività di gestione dei programmi mediante un'interfaccia DBus, per esempio l'aggiornamento della cache, l'aggiornamento, l'installazione e la rimozione dei pacchetti software oppure la ricerca di codec multimediali e dei gestori di file.
