fscrypt è uno strumento di alto livello per la gestione della cifratura di file system Linux. Questo strumento gestisce i metadati, la generazione della chiave, wrapping della chiave, integrazione con PAM e fornisce un'interfaccia uniforme per creare e modificare directory cifrate.

Per usare fscrypt si deve avere un file system con la cifratura abilitata e un kernel che gestisce tale file system in lettura/scrittura. Attualmente, ext4, F2FS e UBIFS gestiscono la cifratura di file system Linux. Ext4 ha supportato la cifratura di file system Linux dalla v4.1, F2FS ha aggiunto il supporto nella v4.2 e UBIFS ha aggiunto il supporto nella v4.10. Altri file system possono aggiungere il supporto per la cifratura nativa in futuro.
