WOL (Wake-on-LAN) è uno standard che permette di accendere un computer attraverso una connessione Ethernet. I computer con un'interfaccia di rete abilitata a WOL possono essere risvegliati dalla modalità "sleep" o avviati dallo standby grazie ad una caratteristica del BIOS.

Una caratteristica che distingue etherwake da altre implementazioni è che gestisce anche le password WOL.
