Authselect è pensato per essere un rimpiazzo per authconfig, ma ha un diverso approccio alla configurazione del sistema. Invece di lasciare che l'amministratore crei lo stack PAM con uno strumento (il che può potenzialmente avere come risultato una configurazione non funzionante), fornisce diversi stack testati (profili) che risolvono un caso d'uso e sono ben testati e supportati. Allo stesso tempo alcune funzionalità obsolete di authconfig non sono supportate da authselect.
