Prometheus Pushgateway esiste per permettere ai lavori effimeri e non interattivi di esporre le loro metriche a Prometheus. Dal momento che questi tipi di lavori possono non esistere abbastanza a lungo per essere catturati, essi possono invece inviare le loro metriche a Pushgateway. Pushgateway poi espone tali metriche a Prometheus.

Pushgateway è dichiaratamente non un aggregatore, ma piuttosto una cache di metriche. Non ha semantiche in stile statsd. Le metriche inviate sono esattamente le stesse che si presenterebbero per la cattura in un programma in esecuzione permanentemente.

Per le metriche a livello di macchina, il collettore textfile di prometheus-node-exporter è solitamente più appropriato. Pushgateway è meglio usarlo per metriche a livello di servizio.
