iotop gør for I/O-forbrug hvad top(1) gør for CPU-forbrug. Programmet overvåger I/O-forbrugsinformationens uddata for Linuxkernen og viser en tabel med det aktuelle I/O-forbrug for processer på systemet. Det er et godt program til at svare på »Hvorfor sender disken så mange data frem og tilbage?«.

iotop kan kun køre under Linux 2.6.20 eller senere og bygget med byggekonfigurationstilvalgene CONFIG_TASKSTATS, CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT, CONFIG_TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING og CONFIG_VM_EVENT_COUNTERS aktiveret.
