controllore della salute del sistema e gestore di watchdog software e hardware

Il programma watchdog scrive su /dev/watchdog ogni dieci secondi. Se il device è aperto ma non viene scritto entro un minuto, la macchina si riavvierà. Questa funzionalità è disponibile quando il kernel è compilato con la gestione del "software watchdog" (standard nei kernel Debian) o se la macchina è dotata di un watchdog hardware (nel qual caso questo pacchetto può anche essere usato per "tenerlo buono", azzerando il suo timer).

La capacità del watchdog software nel kernel di riavviare dipenderà anche dallo stato della macchina e degli interrupt.

Lo stesso strumento watchdog esegue svariati controlli di salute e agisce di conseguenza se il sistema non è in buona forma.
