Un thesaurus è una struttura per classificazione. Può essere visto come un grafo in cui i nodi sono i termini e i vertici sono le relazioni tra i termini.

Biblio::Thesaurus fornisce metodi trasparenti per mantenere file con thesauri. Il modulo usa un sottoinsieme da ISO 2788 che definisce alcune funzionalità standard che devono essere presenti in file di thesauri. Questa ISO include un insieme di relazioni che può essere visto come uno standard, ma questo programma può usarne di definiti dall'utente. Perciò può essere utilizzato sia su file thesaurus ISO sia non ISO.
