Common Test è un'applicazione portabile per test automatici. È adatta per test a scatola nera di sistemi bersaglio di qualsiasi tipo (cioè non necessariamente implementati in Erlang), come anche per test a scatola bianca di programmi Erlang/OTP. Il test a scatola nera è effettuato tramite interfacce standard (come SNMP, HTTP, Corba, Telnet, ecc.) e, se richiesto, tramite interfacce specifiche dell'utente (chiamate spesso porte di test). Il test a scatola bianca di programmi Erlang/OTP è effettuato facilmente mediante chiamata diretta alle funzioni dell'API bersaglio da parte delle funzioni del caso di test. Common Test integra anche l'uso dello strumento OTP cover per analisi di copertura del codice di programmi Erlang/OTP.
