Sikker filsletning

Gendannelse af slettede data fra magnetiske medier er nemmere end hvad mange mennesker tror. En teknik kaldt Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) giver enhver moderat funderet modstander mulighed for at gendanne de sidste to eller tre lag af data skrevet til disken. Wipe skriver gentagende gange specielle mønstre til filerne, der skal fjernes, via fsync()-kald og/eller O_SYNC-bit for at fremtvinge diskadgang.

Wipe kan permanent slette data på harddiske og flashdrev (pas på! flere skrivninger kan skade faste medier).

Dette program er nyttigt i antikriminaltekniske sager og i sikkerhedsaktiviteter.
