Linuxptp er en implementering for Precision Time Protocol (PTP) jævnfør IEEE-standard 1588 for Linux. Inkluderede funktioner:

 - understøttelse for tidsstempling af udstyr og programmer via Linux-

 - understøttelse for Linux PTP Hardware Clock-undersystemet (PHC) ved at

PTP tilbyder højre præcision og hurtigere synkronisering end NTP selv uden udstyrsunderstøttelse. Med udstyrsunderstøttelse kan sub-mikrosekund præcision forventes. Hvor NTP er lavet for WAN-brug, så er PTP designet for LAN-miljøer og gør brug af UDP-multicast.
