Aktivt værktøj til cracking af adgangskoder

John the Ripper er et værktøj designet til at hjælpe systemadministratorer med at finde svage (nemme at gætte eller cracke via mange forskellige forsøg) adgangskoder, og endda automatisk advare brugere via e-post om dem; hvis det ønskes.

Kan bruges med flere hashtyper for crypt(3)-adgangskoder ofte fundet på forskellige Unixvarianter. Understøttet direkte er Kerberos AFS og Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM-hasher samt flere med brugerbidragede rettelser.
