Bzip2 er en frit tilgængelig, patentfri datapakker.

Bzip2 komprimerer filer ved hjælp af en Burrows-Wheeler Blok-sorterende tekst-komprimerende algoritme, samt Huffmankodningen. Komprimeringen er generelt betydeligt bedre i forhold til konventionelle LZ77/LZ78 baserede komprimeringer, samtidig med at hastigheden er i nærheden af PPM-familien af statistiske komprimeringsprogrammer.

Arkivfilformatet bzip2 (.bz2) er ikke kompatibelt med sin forgænger, bzip (.bz).
