Determina o tipo de um ficheiro usando números "mágicos"

O file testa cada argumento e tenta classificá-lo. Há três conjuntos de testes, executados nesta ordem: testes do sistema de ficheiros, testes de números mágicos e testes de linguagem. O primeiro teste a ser bem sucedido determina o tipo de ficheiro que é indicado.

A partir da versão 4, o comando file não é muito mais que um empacotador (wrapper) da biblioteca "magic".
