Axel tenta acelerar o processo de "download" através do uso de múltiplas conexões para um arquivo. Ele também pode usar múltiplos espelhos para um download. Axel tenta ser o mais leve possível (25-30K na forma binária), portanto ele pode ser útil como um clone wget em sistemas com limite crítico de bytes ("byte-critical systems").
