ngrep esforça-se para fornecer a maioria das características comuns do grep do GNU, aplicando-as para a camada de rede. ngrep é uma ferramenta estilo-pcap que permitirá a você especificar expressões regular extendidas para comparar com dados de pacotes. Ele atualmente reconhece TCP, UDP e ICMP através de interfaces Ethernet, PPP, SLIP e "null", e entende lógica de filtro bpf da mesma forma que as ferramentas de farejamento mais comuns, como tcpdump e snoop.
