GNU libtool is een generiek script voor bibliotheek-ondersteuning. Libtool verbergt de complexiteit van het genereren van speciale typen bibliotheken (zoals gedeelde bibliotheken) achter een consistente interface. Om libtool te gebruiken, voeg de nieuwe generieke bibliotheek-commando's toe in je Makefile, Makefile.in of Makefile.am. Zie de documentatie voor details. Libtool ondersteunt het bouwen van statische bibliotheken op alle platforms.
