이 패키지는 bzip2 압축 프로그램이 사용하는 libbzip2가 들어 있습니다.

bzip2는 자유롭게 사용 가능하고, 특허로부터 자유로운, 고품질의 데이터 압축 프로그램입니다. 가장 훌륭한 기술을 이용해 보통 10%에서 15%내로 파일을 압축하며, 압축할 때는 2배, 압축을 풀 때는 6배 정도가 빠릅니다.

bzip2 압축 파일은 Burrows-Wheeler 블럭 소팅 텍스트 압축 알고리즘과 허프만 코딩을 사용합니다. 압축은 전통적인 LZ77/LZ78 알고리즘에 기초한 압축 프로그램으로 압축한 것보다 일반적으로 상당히 좋습니다. 그리고 통계적인 압축 프로그램 중 PPM 계열의 성능에 근접합니다.

bzip2(.bz2) 아카이브 파일 포맷은 이전 버전인 bzip(.bz) 포맷과 호환되지 않습니다.
