file은 여러가지 기준을 검사해 파일 종류를 파악합니다. 세 가지 종류의 검사가 있고 다음 순서로 검사합니다: 파일 시스템 검사, 매직 넘버 검사, 그리고 언어 검사입니다. 처음 성공하는 테스트에 해당하는 파일 종류를 표시합니다.

버전 4부터 file 명령은 "magic" 라이브러리의 래퍼일 뿐입니다.
