MSDOS ARC 프로그램에 기반한 압축 유틸리티

이 프로그램은 버전 5.21에 몇몇 기능을 개선한, MSDOS ARC 프로그램에 기반합니다. 

 o ARC는 Huffman 데이터 압축을 수행합니다. Huffman 압축 알고리즘을 버전 5.12
   이후부터 MSDOS ARC에서 제거되었습니다. 그래픽 이미지 압축에서는 Huffman 
   압축이 Lempel-Ziv 스타일 압축보다 더 효과적임이 밝혀졌습니다. 압축 분석은
   항상 바로 이루어지며, 패킹, 압축, 또는 수치해석에 있어 최선의 방법이
   사용됩니다.


 o ARC는 Squashed 파일을 압축하고 해제합니다. "Squashing"은 MSDOS용 ARC 
   유틸리티 프로그램의 한 종류인, Phil Katz가 개발한 PKxxx에서 만들어졌습니다.
   Dan Lanciani는 Squashing을 처리하기 위한 ARC의 Crunch 코드를 만들었습니다.
   초기 Crunch 코드가 개발된 후 본인은 자잘한 수정을 하였습니다. 수정의
   대부분은 메모리 요구를 줄이는 것이 었습니다. 'q' 옵션 플레그는 반드시
   Squash 파일에 지정되야 합니다. Squashing 알고리즘은 일반적인 Crunsh 
   알고리즘을 대신해서 사용될 것이며, 그리고 앞서와 같이, 패킹과 압축을 
   대조해서 비교할 것입니다.
