Il programma traceroute mostra il percorso compiuto dai pacchetti IP per raggiungere un dato host di rete (locale o Internet). Traceroute mostra l'indirizzo IP e, se possibile, il nome degli host attraversati dai pacchetti nel loro percorso. Traceroute รจ utile come strumento per il debug della rete. Se si hanno problemi di rete, traceroute mostra da quale punto lungo il percorso iniziano i problemi.
Si raccomanda di installare traceroute ove serva uno strumento per la diagnosi dei problemi di rete.
