Questa libreria implementa un'interfaccia in spazio utente ai servizi DRM del kernel. DRM sta per "Direct Rendering Manager" ed è la parte in spazio kernel della "Direct Rendering Infrastructure" (DRI). Attualmente DRI è usato su Linux per fornire dei driver OpenGL con supporto per l'accelerazione hardware.
