`shar' produce i cosiddetti archivi shell a partire da numerosi file, preparandoli per la trasmissione tramite servizi di posta elettronica. `unshar' è utile per spacchettare questi archivi shell dopo la ricezione. Altri utili programmi connessi svolgono altri compiti.
`uuencode' prepara un file per essere trasmesso su di un canale elettronico che ignora o altrimenti modifica l'ottavo bit (bit di ordine più alto) dei byte. `uudecode' effettua la conversione inversa.
