PD-ksh è un sosia quasi completo di ksh di AT&T (si veda il file NOTES per un elenco delle cose non supportate). Attualmente si sta lavorando per renderla completamente compatibile sia con ksh di AT&T sia POSIX (quando i due non sono in conflitto).

Dato che pdksh è libera e può essere compilata ed eseguita sulla maggior parte dei comuni sistemi Unix, è molto utile per creare un'interfaccia utente coerente su diverse macchine. Per esempio, al dipartimento di scienze informatiche della Memorial University of Newfoundland, pdksh è installata su una varietà di macchine, incluse Sun, HP, DecStation, PC con Linux, ecc. ed è la shell di login di circa 4500 utenti.
