paxtar è un'implementazione di un'utilità di archiviazione che legge e scrive molti formati: quelli tradizionali, i formati estesi specificati in IEEE 1003.1 e il formato ar(5) usato dai pacchetti deb(5) (estensione paxtar specifica per MirBSD). L'interfaccia pax è stata progettata dall'IEEE 1003.2 come un compromesso nella controversia cronica su chi fra tar e cpio sia il migliore, ma questa implementazione fornisce paxcpio e paxtar per eseguirli facilmente.

Questa è l'implementazione paxtar MirBSD che gestisce i formati ar, bcpio, cpio, SVR4 cpio con e senza CRC, vecchio tar e ustar, ma non ancora il formato conosciuto come pax. Possiede estensioni per rimuovere dall'archivio ID non numerici per utenti e gruppi, memorizzare soltanto una volta file creati tramite collegamenti fisici, impostare la proprietà al superutente, rendere anonime le informazioni degli inode e dei device, modificare l'mtime a zero e produrre barre finali compatibili con GNU tar su nodi di directory ustar. Il suo formato "ar" è adatto per operare su file *.deb, diversamente da GNU binutils.

Notare che non sono gestiti ACL e attributi estesi. Notare anche che la dimensione dei membri degli archivi è limitata alla larghezza del tipo "long", su Debian GNU/Hurd e Debian GNU/Linux (ma non su Debian GNU/kFreeBSD), che è 2 GiB su piattaforme che non hanno il tipo "long" a 64 bit, a causa di un bug nella libreria GNU C (Debian #317466).
