Il programma insserv è utilizzato dal sistema init standard basato su SysV. Aggiorna l'ordine dei collegamenti simbolici in /etc/rc?.d in base alle dipendenze specificate nelle intestazioni LSB degli script init.d stessi.
Queste relazioni dichiarate tra gli script rendono possibile l'ottimizzazione della sequenza di avvio per l'insieme di pacchetti attualmente installato, al contempo rilevando e rifiutando dipendenze cicliche.
L'uso non corretto di insserv può avere come conseguenza un sistema non avviabile.
