GIJ è un interprete bytecode per Java, non limitato all'interpretazione dei bytecode. Include un caricatore di classi che può caricare dinamicamente oggetti condivisi, per questo scopo è possibile indicargli il nome di una classe compilata e inserita in una libreria condivisa nel percorso delle classi.

Il pacchetto contiene anche una raccolta di script wrapper e link simbolici. Lo scopo è di fornire un'interfaccia simile Java-RTE all'insieme di strumenti GIJ/GCJ, limitato agli strumenti e alle librerie headless.
