Concurrent Versions System - Sistema di versioni concorrente

CVS è un sistema di controllo di versione che permette di mantenere l'accesso a vecchie versioni dei file (solitamente codice sorgente), tenere traccia di chi, quando e perché ha fatto delle modifiche, ecc., come RCS o SCCS. Gestisce sviluppatori multipli, directory multiple, attivazione in base a eventi dell'abilitazione/registro/controllo di varie operazioni e può funzionare su reti WAN. Il manuale texinfo fornisce ulteriori informazioni sugli altri compiti che può effettuare.

Ci sono alcune attività che non sono gestite da CVS; possono essere fatte insieme a CVS ma tendono ad aver bisogno della stesura di script e di ulteriore software oltre a CVS. Queste attività sono: tracciamento dei bug, gestione della compilazione (cioè strumenti make e simil-make) e test automatici. CVS rende comunque più semplici queste attività.

Questo pacchetto contiene un binario CVS che può agire sia da client sia da server, benché non ci sia alcun demone CVS; per accedere a repository remoti non usare più :pserver:, ma :extssh:.
