mdetect è uno strumento per la configurazione automatica del mouse; tipicamente viene utilizzato come back-end da qualche front-end amichevole. mdetect riconosce automaticamente il device ed il protocollo del mouse e li scrive sullo standard output (nella forma utilizzata da gpm). Può essere invocato in modo da produrre un output adatto ai file di configurazione del server X XFree86.
