L'MTA (mail transfer agent) Courier è un server mail/groupware integrato basato su protocolli liberi come ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, LDAP, SSL e HTTP. Courier fornisce servizi ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, webmail e mailing list all'interno di un'unica infrastruttura coerente.

IMAP su SSL è gestito dal normale demone IMAP fornito da courier-imap insieme al wrapper SSL/TLS fornito da courier-ssl.
