Shibboleth implements the OASIS SAML v1.1 specification,

Shibboleth provides a federated authorization and attribute exchange framework using the OASIS SAML v1.1 protocol. It provides web-based single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries and allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources while letting them establish their identities with their own local authentication systems.

This package contains the Apache 2.x Shibboleth module and the daemon that it uses to handle sessions and attribute retrieval.
