Mawk es un intérprete del lenguaje de programación AWK. AWK es útil para el tratamiento de ficheros de datos, recuperación y tratamiento de texto, y para crear prototipos o experimentar con algoritmos. Se puede decir que Mawk es un nuevo awk, ya que implementa el lenguaje AWK tal y como se define en Aho, Kernighan y Weinberger, «The AWK Programming Language», Addison-Wesley Publishing, 1988. (También conocido como el libro de AWK.) Mawk sigue la definición del lenguaje AWK POSIX 1003.2 (borrador 11.3) que contiene algunas especificaciones que no se describen en el libro de AWK, y Mawk proporciona algunas extensiones más.

Mawk es más pequeño y rápido que gawk. Tiene algunos límites en tiempo de compilación tales como NF = 32767 y sprintf buffer = 1020.
