GHDL es un simulador de VHDL, que usa tecnología GCC.

VHDL es un lenguaje estandarizado por el IEEE, hecho para desarrollar sistemas electrónicos.

GHDL implementa el lenguaje VHDL según los estándares IEEE 1076-1987 o IEEE 1076-1993. GHDL compila archivos VHDL y crea un binario que simula (o ejecuta) su diseño.

GHDL no hace síntesis: no puede traducir su diseño a una lista de redes.
