Ispell kontroluje pravopis v čistě textových, LaTeX, sgml/html/xml a nroff souborech. [x]Emacs a jed přitom disponují pěkným rozhraním k ispell a ispell sám funguje spolu s dalšími nástroji i příkazovou řádkou.

Slovníky nejsou v tomto balíčku obsaženy; při nejmenším byste si měli nainstalovat aspoň jeden z nich (výchozí je slovník „iamerican“); pro používané jazyky si nainstalujte odpovídající balíček „ispell-dictionary“.

Také je jistě vhodné si nainstalovat balíček(y) „wordlist“ pro tyto jazyky, protože je používá příkaz (L)ookup (vyhledávání) slovníku ispell.
