Každý MPM (Multi-Processing Module) Apache obsahuje jinak „fungující“ webový server zkompilovaný s odlišným nastavením.

MPM prefork nepodporuje vlákna, tato implementace obsluhuje požadavky způsobem podobajícím se více Apache 1.3. Není tak rychlá jako verze s podporou vláken, ale je mnohem stabilnější. Hodí se především pro weby vyžadující kompatibilitu s knihovnami nepodporujícími vlákna a také když si přejete izolovat každý požadavek (v této situaci odpadá problém kdy by jeden požadavek mohl ovlivnit ostatní.
