Maxima je kompletní symbolický výpočetní systém. Disponuje kompletní podporou manipulace s polynomy, maticemi, racionálními funkcemi, integrály, metodami Todd-coxetter pro konečnou analýzu grup, grafy, výpočty s různou přesností pohyblivé desetinné čárky. Má symbolický debugger kódu maxima. Maxima je založena na původním programu Macsyma, který vytvořilo MIT v letech 1970. Je opravdu spolehlivá, prakticky bez chyb a děr v paměti. Také disponuje stovkami testů sebe sama.
